In Memorium...
Tommy
For A Dead Kitten
Sara Henderson Hay
Put the rubber mouse away,
Pick the spools up from the floor,
What was velvet-shod, and gay,
Will not want them any more.
What was warm, is strangely
cold.
Whence dissolved the little breath?
How could this small body hold
So immense a thing as Death?

All of the pets who have
shared our lives hold a special place in our hearts after death.
These tiny treasures will never be forgotten. Their devotion,
beauty and whimsical capers burn bright in our memories. We look
forward to the day when we will be reunited with our precious
angels in the hereafter.

I would like to mention a few
of our pets who were especially extraordinary. Our "tuxedo"
Maine Coon cat Tommy (pictured above) was truly an angel. Never
have we known such a beautiful, loving soul. Sadly he died from
a lingering heart ailment on June 26, 1986. We still miss our
baby boy tremendously. We were blessed to have known him for
six years.

Mewsette
Mewsette, our snow white Angora
beauty, was our first cat and lived to the ripe old age of twenty.
She had quite an aristocratic background. Her original human
"parents" were actress Karen Black's brother and the
Governor of Maryland's daughter!

Roney
Tyrone or "Roney"was
a gentle little tabby, who along with his orange brother, Lucy,
welcomed us to our new home in Arlington, Virginia back in 1973.
The two guys came galloping across Quantico Street every day
to partake of our hospitality, free eats and caresses!

TomTom
On May 15, 2000, our 14 year
old kitty TomTom passed away. TomTom was with us only two years
but we grew to love this gentle tawny sweetheart. He was such
a huge guy that his former owner nicknamed him "The State
of New York". His snoring was even louder than Dad's!

Snuggles
At the time of her passing
(May 25, 2000), Snuggles was eighteen. She was our little rogue,
feisty and playful right up until the end. She first came into
our life on a cold, rainy night in October, 1986. At that time
she belonged to a neighbor but when they moved, they left Miss
Snuggles behind and we adopted her.

Sir Winston
Sir Winston, senior member
of our feline family, was our "Rock of Gibraltar" kitty!
We also called him the "Miracle Cat", because in July
1993 we almost lost him to an undiagnosed case of diabetes. Sir
Winston battled back against incredible odds and lived nearly
10 more years. He crossed the bridge December 29, 2002. :*-(

Cassie
Cassie was our dainty black
velvet beauty. Cassie had a sad tale to tell. In 1991 she was
missing for three weeks. We searched frantically and put up posters
everywhere. We had just about given up hope when a lady called
from two miles away and said that she had our cat! When we got
Cassie home, we noticed that her abdomen had been slashed. We'll
never know what torture that poor kitty endured, but we are grateful
to have her back. Our beautiful little lady crossed the bridge
on Monday, March 27, 2006 after suffering seizures and paralyzed
hind legs. She was 19 years old.

PeeWee
PeeWee was given to me as a
young chick. She had been taken away from her mother prematurely
and was suffering from an eye infection. I hand fed her every
hour for several weeks before she regained her health and could
eat on her own. She was a darling little birdie and loved to
be petted and kissed! She thought I was her Mama. We lost our
little girl in May 2001. :*-( Our home has been more sad and
silent since her passing...

Stripes
Last but not least, was "Baby
Stripes", the newest addition to our family before we adopted
kittens Cricket and Boleyn. Stripes was a real charmer. He knew
how to use his big flirty eyes to get his way. He was very playful
and outgoing. When we were watching TV, Stripes loved to jump
into my lap and cuddle! Very sadly we let him go on September
1, 2007 after a grim diagnosis of inoperable liver cancer. We
miss him terribly and have made several YouTube tributes for
him: RIP

Mitch
This charming hamster stood
on his hind legs and begged with his tiny paws for us to take
him home from the pet shop. So...what could we do? He was a sweet
little guy and stayed with us for about two years.

Winky
This little guy was originally
named "Cyclops" by us because it seemed one of his
eyes was damaged in the pet shop. They gave him to us free, saying
he would be fed to the snakes otherwise. Apparently the crafty
rodent was putting us on for the next day his eye was fully open
and appeared bright and beady! He came to us Columbus Day weekend,
1996 and left us exactly a year later.

Rocky
Unfortunately we do not have
any photos of Rocky our little green parakeet and first pet we
ever owned. He was an intelligent, wonderful birdie. Rocky had
an extensive vocabulary and loved to dance to the rhumba!
A list of all the other animal
companions who have graced our lives:
Guinea Pig
Napoleon
Opossum
Gandalf
Parakeets
Rocky, Baby, Cupid, Leo and
Dixie
Mice
Curly, Larry, Moe, Pansy, Buttercup,
e.e. teenytoes, Bambi, Melba, and Winky
Hamsters And Gerbils
Algernon, Piglet, Cookie, Sugar
Bear, Huckleberry, Mitch, Ollie, and Gypsum

Farewell our little darlings
and thanks for all the joy and comfort which you brought us.
There is a bridge connecting
Heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of
its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is
a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies,
the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and
warm spring weather. The old and frail are young again. Those
who are maimed are made whole. They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special
person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play
until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks
up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring!
And this one suddenly runs from the group!
You have been seen and when
you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your
arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again,
and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow
Bridge together, never again to be separated.
