My mother, Annie May Fore looking coy at the age of three. This photo was taken in a Newport News studio around 1928. Mom was born in Pamplin City, Virginia on May 1, 1925. Pamplin, on the Southside Railroad, is located 10 miles east of Appomattox, site of the Civil War surrender between Lee and Grant.
After graduating from Pamplin City High in 1942, Mom came to wartime Washington, D.C. She worked at Dun & Bradstreet, the Library of Congress and the Naval Ordnance Lab until she met Alan Wilbur Baldwin...
Anne and Alan married on April 19, 1952 at Walter Reed Chapel. They made their home in Takoma Park, Maryland. They had two daughters, Joette Baldwin (Jo, me) and Roanne (Rosy). Eventually they moved to Oxon Hill, in Prince George's County and later to Arlington, Virginia where we now reside.
The Marshall Hall Amusement Park was about 10 miles from our Oxon Hill home. Rosy and I have many fond memories of riding the carousel, eating cotton candy, swimming, winning prizes and enjoying picnics beside the Potomac River. Sadly, the Park closed by the mid 1970's.
Mom loved classical music and she was a volunteer for the National Symphony Women's Committee for over 25 years. She also played violin, accordian and piano. She's pictured here after returning from a concert at the Kennedy Center. The charming little lady with the Christmas bow is our kitty, Snuggles who was with us for 14 years. Our dear Mom passed away December 5, 2004. We miss her so much! :*(
Since 1996, Mom had gotten re-acquainted with her son, Bruce Barger, from her first marriage. She was bedridden with multiple sclerosis for nearly 10 years. Rosy and I took care of her with the help of Visiting Nurses.
